James: Day 20

1:27 Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world.
There are and can only be two distinct objects of worship: self and God. Around those two all the religions of the world are built. Every religion other than yours, Christian, seeks its own glory and its own good. Only the Christian religion, the only true religion, puts God at the center of all things. This is why true religion, the Christian religion, cares about the needs of others. Only God truly cares about your neighbor. Only God loves the widows and orphans as they deserved to be loved. No other religion has time for them, unless it plays into their best interests. Idols cannot love. Idols can only be consumed with self. Psalm 115 declares the truth that you become like what you worship. As you worship the one, true God, Christian, you begin to love what He loves, and desire the things He desires. He desires mercy, and not sacrifice; He desires compassion, not the killing of bulls and goats. He wants you to love others the way He has loved you. He wants you to put aside your needs and your glories, the way He has done for you. Real religion has hands and feet, ears that listen, and eyes that weep. Real religion takes as a model all that has been done for you, and works it out in the real world. But it is not simply a model. It is the very energy of the Spirit to accomplish all things through you. It is God, working through your life, to reconcile the world to Himself.
